At Last, Debbie Wasserman Schultz Calls on Anthony Weiner to Pull Out
Ending a week of silence, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued a statement Saturday calling on New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner to resign.
It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign, said Rep. Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. The behavior he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiners continued service in Congress is untenable.
The statement continued, This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House -- and for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important -- his and his familys well-being.
The final straw for Wasserman Schultz apparently was Friday's revelation that Weiner had been in contact with a 17-year-old Delaware high school student.
In what may or may not be coincidental timing, DWS is scheduled to appear with Republican national chairman Reince Priebus on NBCs Meet the Press" Sunday.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., joined DWS in calling for Weiner to pull out.
