At Last ... Bill McCollum Endorses Rick Scott for Governor

On the same day the Sunshine State News Poll suggested a "McCollum Effect" could lead to Rick Scott's defeat in the Florida gubernatorial election, Attorney General Bill McCollum, finally, endorsed his fellow Republican.

The poll showed that Scott's continued struggle to lock up Republican support is working to Democrat Alex Sink's advantage. McCollum's failure to endorse Scott, until today, was seen as a crucial factor in the tight electoral equation.

Could the endorsement's timing be merely a coincidence? That seems even less likely since it surfaced just hours after my blog challenged McCollum to "man up."

A less salutary theory is that McCollum deliberately timed his announcement to get the smallest amount of media exposure. Friday afternoons notorious dead zones of daily news deadlines.

And that would explain why the attorney general also chose late Friday to declare he would not appeal the court decision striking down Florida's ban on homosexual adoptions. That decision by the AG will not endear him to GOP faithful already stewing over his tardy gubernatorial endorsement.
