Former state Rep. Lake Ray, a Republican, announced on Tuesday that he is running for Duval County Tax Collector.
“Jacksonville needs someone with a proven record of management, a proven record of trust and a proven record of making sure the government uses its resources correctly,” Ray said. “No one likes paying taxes but it’s a necessary part of keeping our society functioning. If entrusted with this office, I will be there to serve you the taxpayer - to make the process as painless as possible.
“I’m proud of my record in business and in elected office,” Ray added. “I’ve lowered taxes, created efficiencies and helped foster an environment to grow our economy. As Jacksonville grows and technologies change, we must remain innovative and efficient in our approach. I look forward to sharing my ideas on these topics with the people of Jacksonville.”
Ray served two terms on the Jacksonville City Council before serving eight years in the Florida House. After facing term limits, Ray ran for Congress but lost out in the Republican primary to John Rutherford. Ray has been president of the First Coast Manufacturers Association (FCMA) since 2011. He will face former Jacksonville City Councilman Jim Overton, also a Republican, to replace Michael Corrigan who is headed off to serve as CEO of Visit Jacksonville.
