Kendrick Meek Backs Obama Suit Against Arizona Immigration Laws
With U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder unleashing a lawsuit on Arizona for its new immigration laws, at least one Florida Democrat is standing with the Obama administration -- U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek who is running for the U.S. Senate.
"I strongly oppose the recent immigration law in Arizona and will fight attempts to implement similar laws in Florida, said Meek. We need comprehensive immigration reform, not philosophy driven policies and patchwork solutions. The Department of Justice did the right thing in fighting this law.
"The Arizona law is neither fair nor practical, added Meek. It encourages police to question people who have done nothing wrong, and it does a disservice to people in this country who are employed, paying their taxes and are good citizens of their communities.
Meek said his own experience reinforced his convictions. "As a former trooper in the Florida Highway Patrol, I know laws like these will also hamper law-enforcement efforts and make it harder to find people who will speak out as witnesses to crimes, said Meek. This law is impractical and will not make any of our communities or any of our families safer. Fighting the Arizona law and similar measures is the right thing to do."
