John Stemberger: Ultrasound Abortion Bill Will Become Law Under Scott

John Stemberger of the Florida Family Policy Council says it is "unlikely" that the vetoed ultrasound-before-abortion bill will come up for an override vote at the 2011 Legislature "because a couple of the new GOP House member pickups are not pro-life."

But Stemberger said the inability to gain a two-thirds majority on the proposal doesn't mean the idea is dead.

"The more likely scenario would be that 'ultrasound' would be brought up again in the 2011 session, where it could now be easily passed and the new governor, Rick Scott, would sign the bill into law as he promised," Stemberger suggested.

The 2010 bill was vetoed by lame duck Gov. Charlie Crist as he was leaving the Republican Party to embark on his "independent" bid for U.S. Senate.

On a separate but related front, social conservatives are shopping legislation that would outlaw abortions in Florida entirely.
