John McCain Will Stay Out of 2012 GOP Fight for Now
John McCain, elder statesman?
Politico is reporting that the U.S. senator from Arizona is keeping on the sidelines during the 2012 Republican presidential race and will not back any of the candidates as the race begins. McCain is in an odd spot. Not only is he the GOPs last presidential nominee but his running mate, former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, is a possible candidate.
There is a recent example of how McCain should not handle the 2012 battle. Al Gore played his cards poorly in 2004, backing Howard Dean for the Democratic nomination who went on to lose to John Kerry. Gores backing of Dean angered many of his supporters since he did not give much notice to his running mate from 2000 -- Joe Lieberman, who was also in the presidential contest.
