John Glenn: It was 50 Years Ago Today -- 'Godspeed'

You might remember when it happened. You might just remember seeing it covered on previous anniversaries or other space-related programs, but once you do, it's tough to forget hearing that countdown introduced with the timeless, "Godspeed, John Glenn."

Fifty years ago today, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth. Already a military hero, the flight made him a national hero, ticker-tape parades and all. After decades of space flight, and the unfortunate mothballing of our country's manned space programs, it might be tough to remember how much this meant in 1962. No one -- including, most importantly, Glenn himself -- could be sure he'd make it back alive.

He did, and his country was inexpressibly better for it.

See it again on YouTube here.

It still sends chills down your spine.
