Joe Martinez Running for Congress

Former Miami Dade County Commission Chairman Joe Martinez will officially announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 26th Congressional District of Florida on Thursday, according to a press release.

The district extends from Kendall to Key West.

Martinez's name had beenfloating as a potential nominee for the 2014 election since Rep. Joe Garcia, D-Fla., defeated incumbent Republican Rep. David Rivera in 2012.

I am looking forward to officially launching this campaign to bring back the core American values of hard work and perseverance. said Martinez. My knowledge and experience of local government give me a much-needed perspective that can ensure our local economy receives adequate attention for projects like the Port of Miami expansion or protecting the natural beauty of the Florida Keys.

A poll recently conducted by the Washington, D.C., firm The Tarrance Group shows that despite his opponents having been openly campaigning for months, Joe Martinez is the front-runner in the 2014 Republican primary.
