Joe Garcia Apologizes for Sexist Comment about Hillary Clinton
You'll have to listen carefully to catch this incredible videoed comment obtained by The Miami Herald and first shown by ABC Miami -- in which CD 26 candidate Joe Garcia describes Hillary Clinton’s qualifications to serve as president in terms of whether he would have sexual relations with her.
Here's the transcript of the broadcast:
"Now to Vote 2016 and a controversial, some say sexist comment from a South Florida candidate for Congress. The candidate is Joe Garcia, a Democrat trying to win back his old congressional seat. Our senior political reporter Michael Putney is in our newsroom now with more on this story.
"Calvin, this is the latest example of a politician popping off, saying something inappropriate when he doesn't think he's being recorded, but Joe Garcia was being recorded, talking about Hillary Clinton and sex.
"Joe Garcia is a big talker, a brass politician who occasionally says things he later regrets. Looks like that happened Saturday night. Garcia was in Key West to speak at the opening of a Democratic Party campaign office. He was talking beforehand in the hallway with some men, unaware a campaign tracker, someone working for his Republican opponent, was recording what he said.
"The video first obtained by the Miami Herald was shot at an odd angle and you can't see Garcia but you can hear him say, 'And Hillary is under no allusions that you want to have sex with her or that she's going to seduce you or outthink you.'
"A man says something you can't make out, and Garcia replies, 'I don't want to be offensive to women.' But some women probably were offended. A Republican Party spokesman called Garcia’s remarks shameful and disgusting.
"Garcia initially tried to say he was really complimenting Hillary Clinton as someone who would make a great president, but a few hours later he issued a statement saying, 'I apologize for my poorly word comment about Senator Clinton.'
It's anyone's guess why Joe Garcia would have made such an off the wall comment. It’s not a question of being politically correct. It’s a question of using good judgment. And in this case Joe Garcia didn’t."
