Jeff Brandes Says he Won't Run for Bill Young's Seat
Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, said he wouldn't be making a run for Bill Young's congressional seat in 2014, according to SaintPetersblog.
Brandes said he wouldn't be looking to take Young's seat, but would instead focus on his re-election to the Florida Senate.
I know its been less than 24 hours since Congressman Young made his announcement, but this is an easy decision for me and my family, said Brandes. We have three young children. We have deep roots in St. Petersburg. And I just think, right now, I can get more done for our community from where I am at in the Florida Senate.
Among the names of those thought to have their eyes on the seat are Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, and former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, though neither has confirmed running as of Thursday.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Bill Young, R-Fla., announced he would not be seeking re-election in 2014 and would be retiring. He had been involved in Florida politics for over 50 years.
