Jeff Atwater Showcases Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday

On Wednesday, state CFO Jeff Atwater highlighted the current back-to-school sales tax holiday going on through Florida.

“Through the end of this weekend, shoppers gain a reprieve from state and local sales taxes on many of the items needed to set our students up for success,” Atwater noted. “Parents can now save on clothing items that cost $100 or less, office supplies less than $15, and if you're in the market for a new computer, the exemption also applies to a $750 or less computer purchase.

“The National Retail Federation estimates that families spend on average $600 on back-to-school supplies, making this week a great opportunity to teach a lesson in the value of a dollar while supporting local and small businesses across our state. In fact, it is estimated that this year's 10-day tax-holiday will save shoppers an estimated $67.8 million statewide,” Atwater added.

“Only 17 states offer tax-free holidays, and this year, the Florida Legislature extended their commitment to Florida families by passing legislation that renders college textbooks tax-free all year long,” Atwater continued. “The start of a new school year is an exciting time ripe with promise for the year ahead. Take advantage of the chance for a lesson in personal finance with your child and remember to set a budget to help keep yourselves on track.”
