Jeff Atwater: North Port Man Charged with Workers’ Comp Fraud
A North Port man was charged with workers compensation fraud and grand theft for allegedly filing false insurance claims that allowed him to collect more than $34,000 between December 2006 and August 2011, the office of Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater announced Monday.
The Florida Department of Financial Services Division of Insurance Fraud claims Jovan Bokun misrepresented the extent of an injury to his left wrist while working as a general laborer with Parker Hannifin Corp. in December 2006. The office reported that Bokun was found to have no work restrictions as asserted after a videotape surveillance.
Floridas workers compensation system is designed to protect Floridas work force, Atwater stated in a release. When fraudsters abuse the system, it cripples businesses and honest Floridians bear the burden through increased premiums. This is why my office is committed to putting bad actors who perpetrate fraud behind bars.
