Jacksonville Heads to Polls on Tuesday for First Round of Mayoral Contest
Jacksonville goes to the polls on Tuesday to help determine who the next mayor is going to be. None of the candidates is expected to pull a majority of the vote on Tuesday -- meaning the two top candidates will square off in a few weeks to see who replaces term-limited Mayor John Peyton.
The election is open to all votes and has drawn a crowded back. Republican candidates include Duval County Tax Collector Mike Hogan; Sulzbacher Center president and CEO Audrey Moran, who served under both Peyton and former Mayor John Delaney who is now the president of the University of North Florida; and Rick Mullaney who served as general counsel of the city and also worked for Delaney. Democrats in the field include former Al Gore aide turned university administrator, Alvin Brown, and law enforcement official Warren Lee. Steve Irvine is running with no party affiliation.
Polls show Hogan and Moran in a close heat for first place but neither is close to breaking 50 percent. Expect a second round of voting in May.
