House Readies for Final Vote on Allowing School Prayer

Students would be allowed to run their own inspirational prayer session, regardless of the message, at school events under a Senate bill that was moved toward a third and final vote by the Florida House on Wednesday.

The bill, SB 98, would allow school districts to adopt resolutions that let students use inspirational messages, without backing or influence from the district or district employees, at school-sanctioned exercises or assemblies.

Democrats peppered the sponsor of the bill about what would be allowed as a message, such as John Lennons song "Imagine" or references to socialism or Satan.

Rep. Charles Van Zant, R-Keystone Heights, said the bill wouldnt hinder any student messages.

That would be the student's prerogative, Van Zant said.

The American Civil Liberties Union has said a lawsuit should be expected.
