House GOP Ready to Reject Debt Ceiling Proposal Tonight
Florida's GOP congressional delegation was lining up to vote against a proposed increase in the debt-ceiling Tuesday night.
President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are seeking to raise the $14.4 trillion ceiling by $2.4 trillion, without any spending cuts or budgetary reforms.
Absent any cost-cutting, House Resolution 1954 appears doomed in the Republican-controlled chamber.
Conveying the sentiment of many Republicans, Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, said, I vehemently oppose any legislation to increase the debt ceiling without significant spending cuts and serious reforms to the way Washington spends taxpayer money.
We need to be making spending cuts in the trillions, not billions, of dollars, and we need to enact real reforms to the budgetary process, like spending caps or a balanced budget amendment."
Brace for a prolonged political brawl. This is just getting started.
