House Freedom Caucus Backs Dan Webster for Speaker
U.S. Rep. Dan Webster, R-Fla. is an underdog to defeat U.S. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as Republicans caucus to find a replacement for outgoing U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, but the Florida congressman got a boost on Wednesday with a key endorsement.
The House Freedom Caucus, a group of more conservative legislators, backed Webster for the Republican nod.
“Under the present circumstances and without significant changes to conference leadership and process, Rep. Daniel Webster would be best equipped to earn back the trust of the American people as Speaker of the House,” the House Freedom Caucus members announced on Wednesday.
McCarthy is expected to win the most votes in the caucus on Thursday but the real question is will he have enough supports when the choice goes to the full House later this month since conservatives in the GOP ranks might ditch him for another candidate.
