House Committee to Hear Campus Carry Bill
The House Higher Education & Workforce Committee will hear a bill to allow guns on college campuses Wednesday morning in Tallahassee.
The bill, HB 4001, sponsored by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, would allow adults 21 years or older with valid concealed carry licenses to carry their firearms on public colleges or universities.
The proposal has gathered intense criticism from college professors, students and some state lawmakers who say adding guns to the mix of an already stressful environment would only lead to disastrous consequences for college students.
Gun rights groups, however, say the bill is critical to the safety of college students, especially young females who are likelier targets of sexual assault while in college.
The meeting begins at 8 a.m.
