Hearing Today on ACLU, La Raza Suit Against New Voting Laws
Submitted by Kevin Derby on August 10, 2012 - 10:25am
An administrative law judge is hearing a suit later today against the Florida Department of State's implementation of a new elections law in 62 counties. The disputed provisions of the law are:
- reduction of the days and times duringwhich voters may vote early;
- stipulations that a Florida voter who has moved from one county to another, and failed to alert the elections supervisor in his new county of his move, may only fill out a provisional ballot on voting day (provisional ballots are counted toward the election only if the voter proves his eligibility subsequent to voting);
- the imposition of allegedly onerous new burdens and restrictions on organizations dedicated to registering people to vote.
The suit is being brought bySen. Arthenia Joyner, R-Tampa, theAmerican Civil Liberties Union, and the National Council of La Raza.
