Gus Bilirakis: County of Origin Labeling Act Avoids $200 Million in Tariffs on Florida Exports

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis voted to back the Country of Origin Labeling Amendments Act on Wednesday, noting it would help prevent a trade war with Canada and Mexico.

“Agricultural exports are a mainstay of the Floridian economy, and without congressional action, these exporters would suffer,” Bilirakis said. “With a weak national economy, tariffs on exports of orange juice, chicken, and bread would hurt Florida’s farmers and further diminish economic growth. I was proud to join my colleagues in this bipartisan effort to prevent damage to our local economy.”

Bilirakis noted if County of Origin Labels remain in place on some products, Mexico and Canada will raise tariffs, hitting Florida for more than $200 million.
