Gus Bilirakis Backs David Jolly to Replace Marco Rubio in Senate

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., announced on Tuesday he was backing U.S. Rep. David Jolly, R-Fla., to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. Currently running for the Republican presidential nomination, Rubio has said he will not seek a second term in 2016.

“It is a pleasure to endorse Congressman David Jolly’s candidacy to become Florida’s next United States senator,” Bilirakis said. “As a Tampa Bay native, David is keenly aware of the issues facing Floridians at both the local and national levels. His command of the legislative process and institutional knowledge will no doubt serve as a benefit to the people of Florida, especially our veterans. I look forward to fostering an even stronger Tampa Bay leadership presence in Congress with a great partner and friend in the U.S. Senate.”

“I am honored to have my friend, Congressman Bilirakis, endorse my candidacy for the U.S Senate,” Jolly said. “Gus and I have worked closely on issues of great importance to all Floridians, including veterans health care, flood insurance relief for homeowners and businesses, and measures to improve our state’s economy by improving and expanding travel and tourism.  We share a commitment to advancing common sense, conservative policies that are right for the future of our nation and the state of Florida.”

Bilirakis becomes the third congressman to back Jolly in the Senate race, joining Florida Republicans U.S. Reps. Rich Nugent and Dennis Ross.
