Greg Evers Retreats, Now Backs Rick Scott Rejecting High-Speed Rail Stimulus Funds
Sen. Greg Evers, R-Baker, wrote Gov. Rick Scott and U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, withdrawing his name from the letter that he signed along with 25 other senators, asking for more time from the federal government to obtain the funds for a high-speed rail project that Scott had rejected.
Evers, who represents all of Holmes and Washington counties and parts of Bay, Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton counties claimed to be revoking my signature from the letter sent to LaHood last week.
I, like you, and so many conservatives in our state, strongly oppose high-speed rail, claimed Evers in a letter to Scott. In fact, I was one of a small minority of members who voted against it when it was up for the original vote in the 2009 special session. However, I am also against another project I think is just as much, if not more of a boondoggle: SunRail.
I fully support your decision to send back the money earmarked for high-speed rail and implore you to revisit your budget proposal as it pertains to SunRail, continued Evers. We should not fund any rail projects with Florida taxpayer dollars.
