Gov. Scott Quashes Idea of Calling Special Session on Immigration

The St. Pete Times is a little behind the times. A blog posted Friday related:

"Palm Beach County Republican Party chairman Sid Dinerstein plans to ask the state GOP's executive committee [Saturday] to pass a resolution calling on Gov. Rick Scott to call a special legislative session ... to pass an E-Verify immigration bill."

That idea was addressed by the governor himself in a Sunshine State News interview last Tuesday -- and he said no.

Here's our question and Scott's answer:

Sunshine State News:
Do you think the inaction by the Legislature, given that surrounding states have passed tough immigration laws, sends the message that illegals are welcomed here? In effect, are we creating a Sanctuary State for illegals? Insofar as House leaders said they "ran out of time," should the Legislature be called back for a special session to deal with this?

Scott:
"I think we ARE sending a message that illegals are not welcome here. But I think we have to do more, first to make sure the federal government is doing its job to secure our borders and implement programs and as I continue to say, I will make sure all government employees go through E-Verify. We need to continue to address this issue in Florida. But I have no plans to call the Legislature back for a special session to deal with this."
