Gov. Scott Pushes Charter, Virtual School Expansion

Gov. Rick Scott embarked on a bill-signing tour of the state Monday, visiting schools in Ocoee, St. Petersburg and Fort Lauderdale in order to highlight the signing of a spate of bills expanding charter and virtual schools.

Scott touted the bills as a way to buttress his efforts to bring jobs to Florida by creating a highly-skilled and highly-educated work force.

"One of the critical components of creating jobs and turning Florida's economy around is to make sure our state has the best educated work force, ready to work in our 21st century economy. The legislation I sign today moves our state closer to having world-class schools that graduate students ready for those jobs," Scott said.

Here are the bills Scott is highlighting on his tour:

SB 1546 -- allows charter schools that earn an "A" rating in two out of three years to enroll more students.

HB 7197 -- allows charter schools to offer online classes.

HB 1331 -- expands opportunity scholarships that allow students to attend a different school if their school is failing, by stretching the definition of "failing" from two "F" grades in a row to two "F" grades in four years.

HB 1329 -- opens up McKay Scholarships for students with special learning needs to attend private schools.

HB 965 -- increases the tax credit for businesses participating in the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program.
