Gov. Scott Begins Florida's 500-Day Countdown to 500th Year Anniversary

Gov. Rick Scott was in Miami Friday to kick off the 500-day countdown to the 500th anniversary of the European discovery of modern-day Florida. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon first reached the peninsula in 1513.

He was joined by Ambassador Cristina Barrios, consul general to Spain and Secretary of State Kurt Browning to mark the beginning of "Viva Florida 500," the state's quincentennial celebration.

"Florida's 500th anniversary is a milestone unlike any other in the history of the United States. By showcasing the diversity and depth of Florida history, we will spur new interest in our state and create new opportunities for our businesses, while also helping educate people of all ages about how Florida has positively impacted our country and the world," Scott said.
