Gov. Rick Scott Touts First Week Accomplishments

Gov. Rick Scott held a press conference Friday to review his first week as governor, highlighting his executive orders aimed at cutting out regulations that hamper job growth and his appointments of agency heads. He said his first moves reflected his focus on jobs and Florida's economy.

"We've got to recognize we're competing against 49 other states and some other countries, too," Scott said.

He touted his appointments of Billy Buzzet, an executive with the St. Joe Company, as the secretary of the Department of Community Affairs and Kurt Browning as a return Secretary of State.

"(Buzzett) will work closely with the other agencies to figure out how to reduce regulations," Scott said.

On education, Scott refered to his trip with Michelle Rhee Thursday to Florida International Academy, a charter school in South Florida, and reiterated his belief in school choice. But he stopped short of saying he will push for the universal vouchers he has preferred in the past.

"I believe competition will make all of us better. We'll look at that (vouchers) down the road," he said.

Scott also disputed reports that he is in favor of bringing large, Las Vegas-style destination casinos to Florida, but at the same time did not completely rule it out.

"As you know, my view on gaming is that I don't want the state to become too reliant on gaming. We already have gaming in the state. I haven't made any decision on gaming or gambling," Scott said.
