Gov. Rick Scott Orders Special Election for Tony Hill's District 1 Seat

Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order Friday setting up a special election for state Senate District 1, the seat held by Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, until he resigned recently to take a position in the administration of new Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown.

The primary will be held on Sept. 20, with the general election taking place Oct. 18. The district includes parts of Duval, St. Johns, Putnam, Flagler and Volusia counties.

Because committee weeks were pushed up to accomodate the start of session in January for the added task of redistricting, Hill's seat will be empty when they begin in September. Hill served as vice chair on the Children, Families and Elder Affairs Committee,Military, Space and Domestic Security Committee, and as a member on the Budget Subcommittee on General Government Appropriations, Budget Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development Appropriations, Community Affairs Committee and Regulated Industries Committee.
