GOP Rivals Pick Apart Newt Gingrich's Alien 'Review Board'

Newt Gingrich, asked at Saturday's ABC presidential debate to detail his idea for a review board to regularize illegal immigrants, suggested that the panels could be patterned after local draft boards of former years.

Gingrich, who voted for amnesty in the 1980s, has proposed that illegals who have been in this country for 25 years could be eligible for a green card.

He also renewed his call for "an effective guest worker program."

But Mitt Romney countered, "Anytime we talk about a form of amnesty ... we will create another magnet that draws people into our country illegally."

Debate moderator Diane Sawyer pre-empted many of the candidates by saying, "We can all stipulate the No. 1 job is to secure the border."

Rick Perry, who has come under fire for granting in-state college tuition to illegals in Texas, took a harder line, saying he would not sue states like Arizona that pass tough immigration laws.

"Just enforce the laws on the books now," he said.
