Good for Rep. Debbie Mayfield and Scripps TC Newspapers

I talk a lot about what mainstream media do wrong, so I don't want to forget to point it out when one among them does something right.

Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers -- the newspaper group that includes The Stuart News, The Port St. Lucie News, The Fort Pierce Tribune and the Vero Beach Press-Journal -- produced an editorial on Monday applauding state Rep. Debbie Mayfield, R-Vero Beach for saving Florida taxpayers $41.8 million.

She did it by listening to her constituents, by keeping a close and skeptical eye on the spend-happy habits of the Florida Department of Transportation -- and by nothing more than the insertion of 34 words into a large transportation bill to keep FDOT from spending taxpayer money on frivolous landscaping during simple resurfacing projects.

This is what her insertion reads: "Department districts may not expend funds for landscaping in connection with any project that is limited to resurfacing existing lanes unless the expenditure has been approved by the department's secretary or the secretary's designee."

Have a look at the editorial. Good for Mayfield. And for Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, too. It was a worthy accomplishment for Mayfield's hometown newspaper to note.
