George Orwell's '1984' Sees Increase in Sales After NSA Leak
Three editions of George Orwell's '1984' have seen huge increases in Amazon sales in the wake of the National Security Agency surveillance program leak. Orwell's novel focuses on a Big Brother government andtotalitarianrule.
The NSA was founded 60 years ago in 1952, three years after Orwell published the book in 1949, but the book's age hasn't stopped it from being highly popular in Amazon sales. On Wednesday, five editions of Orwell's novel saw big increases on Amazon's Movers and Shakers list, which keeps track of products that have seen large increases in sales over the past 24 hours. One edition of the book saw sales go up 169 percent in the last 24 hours.
The dystopian novel is about an authoritarian state where the government constantly monitors the thoughts of its citizens. The government in Orwell's novel even goes so far as to track its citizens' thoughts.
Last week, reports surfaced about a huge U.S. government surveillance program tracking the phone records of millions of Americans. The government also reportedly has a system to monitor emails, internet searches, photos and other data from many major American Internet companies.
