George LeMieux Hammers Bill Nelson on Balanced Budget
Former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, now in a crowded Republican primary looking to challenge Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, said on Wednesday that Senate Democrats remain a major obstacle to passing a federal balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
The Senate Republicans, realizing the severity of our countrys debt crisis, proposed a balanced budget amendment that forces Washington to live within its means, LeMieux said in a statement on Wednesday. In stark contrast, Bill Nelson and the Senate Democrats introduced an amendment that restricts Congress from lowering taxes and does not cap spending. In my Four Freedoms Plan, I propose a serious balanced budget amendment that ties spending caps to GDP and requires a supermajority to raise taxes and the debt ceiling. If Bill Nelson and the Senate Democrats want to save our future generations, they need to quit introducing ineffective fiscal legislation and start making serious decisions.
