George LeMieux Condemns North Korea

Outgoing U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, a member of the Armed Services Committee, condemned North Koreas recent military actions and called for China to intervene.

I strongly condemn North Koreas unprovoked attack against the Republic of Korea and urge the regime in Pyongyang to stop any further hostility, said LeMieux. This act of war cannot be tolerated and directly violates international law, the Korean Armistice Treaty and the United Nations Charter. The United States stands ready to defend our democratic partner. Sending the USS George Washington (CVN-73) to the region sends a strong signal reaffirming our nations commitment to defend our ally, the Republic of Korea.

The weak response from the Peoples Republic of China is unacceptable and raises serious questions as to whether or not China will act as a responsible partner in Asia. The time has come for the Chinese to end their support for the North Korean dictatorship, he added. My sympathies to the people of the Republic of Korea, especially the families of the wounded and fallen soldiers and citizens.
