George LeMieux to Bill Nelson: Stop Voting to Raise Debt Ceiling

Republican Senate candidate George LeMieux on Wednesday challenged Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., to oppose raising the debt ceiling.

"When I served in the United States Senate, I voted twice against raising the debt ceiling and I would do so again today. My opponent, Bill Nelson, voted to raise the debt ceiling half a dozen times," LeMieux said in a statement.

"With a $14 trillion debt and unemployment in Florida near 11 percent, now, more than ever, we need to get serious about balancing the budget and reducing the debt. Our national debt continues to threaten our nations future and we need to elect leaders who will work to create an environment that empowers job creators and brings fiscal sanity to Washington. I implore Senator Nelson to do the responsible thing, support meaningful spending reform, and balance the budget."

Dan McLaughlin, spokesman for Nelson, called LeMieux's challenge "deceptive rhetoric."

"On the debt ceiling, Sen. Nelson voted against raising it four times. Also, Sen. Nelson was one of the few Democrats to vote against raising the debt ceiling for the TARP bank bailout.

"Ironically, it was George Lemieux who flat-out declared in an October 2008 newsletter that the hard-to-swallow bank 'bailout was needed' to help the financial sector recover," McLaughlin told Sunshine State News.
