George LeMieux Bashes Bill Nelson on ICE Detention Center Proposal
Former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, now in a crowded Republican primary to take on Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, took aim at the incumbents support of opening a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention Center in Southwest Ranches.
LeMieuxs team noted that Nelson supported the detention center in April -- and has not changed his mind despite local residents opposing it.
The residents of Southwest Ranches and Pembroke Pines are clearly and adamantly against building a prison on the edge of their bedroom communities, said LeMieux in a statement on Thursday. By supporting this project, Bill Nelson is blatantly ignoring the pleas of his constituents. I know that being a United States senator means protecting your constituents, yet Bill Nelson continues to support a highly unpopular and potentially dangerous prison in a residential neighborhood. It is time Nelson starts listening to his constituents and does what is right.
