'Generation X' 2012 Hopeful Thad McCotter Focuses on Social Security

On Monday afternoon, U.S. Rep. Thad McCotter of Michigan, a dark horse candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, will unveil his plan to save Social Security.

McCotter spoke to supporters in a conference call on Monday morning and opened a new line of attack in the debate on Social Security reform. The only Republican presidential candidate who is younger than President Barack Obama, McCotter, who is 46, referred to himself as a member of Generation X and insisted that voters his age were worried about Social Security.

People my age and younger are concerned that Social Security will not be there for them, insisted McCotter. The congressman added that his market-based, empowerment solutions would not raise taxes.

Shut out of most of the Republican presidential debates, McCotter has rarely broken 1 percent in the national polls. Despite that lack of support, he insisted on Monday that the other candidates would not offer serious solutions on Social Security.

It will not be on the debate stage, McCotter said, referring to the debate among the major Republican candidates on Monday night in Tampa.
