Gary Johnson Launches Campaign Against Military Action in Syria
Former Gov. Gary Johnson of New Mexico, the Libertarian Partys presidential nominee in 2012, weighed in on Thursday to oppose military action against Syria, slamming it as an ill-advised military intervention on the other side of the globe.
Johnson sent out an email to supporters arguing against military intervention as he prepares to launch a campaign to stop it.
After first insisting he didnt need it, President Obama has decided to seek approval from Congress before launching missiles or dropping bombs on Syria, Johnson wrote. While the whole idea of intervening militarily in Syrias civil war is a bad one, asking Congress for authorization is the right thing to do.
Johnson called for his supporters to take action. Now it is time for us to step up and do our part as concerned Americans who abhor the use of chemical weapons, but do not see how launching an attack on Syria will serve anyones interest, especially the Syrian peoples -- or make us safer here in the United States, Johnson wrote. Now that Congress will have a say in the decision to launch the missiles -- or not, we have a few short days to let our senators and representatives know that military intervention is a bad plan, plain and simple. Emails and phone calls to senators and members of Congress make a difference, especially if they receive a lot of them.
Using his Our American Initiative as a vehicle, Johnson also plans to launch a social media campaign against military action against Syria.
