Gadsden County to Consider Slots at Gretna Horse Track
Efforts to expand gaming in the Sunshine State are not limited to casinos in South Florida.
Gadsden County commissioners on Tuesday are scheduled to hear a request to let the residents in one of the poorest counties in Florida decide if slot machines could be installed at Creek Entertainment Gretna Racing that is to open next month about 25 miles west of Tallahassee.
The race-track and poker room is an effort by the Alabama-based Poarch Band of Creek Indiansand developer David Romanik.
The item before the commission states that allowing slots at the pari-mutuel horse-racing facility will allow the county to tap into expected phenomenal growth coming to the mostly rural north Florida region.
The agenda item states that slot machines would not be allowed at any other location.
If approved by commissioners, a referendum would be held with the Jan. 31, 2012, presidential primary.
