Frederica Wilson: No Transit Money for States with ‘Stand Your Ground’

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, announced Tuesday she would introduce next week a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives aimed at forcing states to repeal their Stand Your Ground laws.

Her bill calls for the federal government to withhold transportation funding to states that have Stand Your Ground laws.

I have been disturbed by the murder of Trayvon Martin for many months, Wilson stated in a release.

The thought that George Zimmerman could get away with such a horrendous crime is a travesty of justice. I have been contemplating and working on this legislation since the incident that shocked the conscience of the nation -- the murder of Trayvon Martin.

There are bills in other states known by different taglines that have the same unintended consequences as Stand Your Ground. They should all be repealed.

My legislation would withhold a portion of transportation funds from any state that has a law that allows an armed person to pursue, confront and shoot-to-kill an unarmed person in public.
