Florida Power & Light Co. has, as expected, filed for a base rate increase on Monday that, if approved later this year by state regulators, could mean a $2.48 a month hike for the typical residential customers.
The typical customer uses 1,000 kilowatts a month, which currently comes with a monthly charge of $94.62.
To check out what the increase means for an individual homeowner, FPL has posted a website where people can calculate their costs. Visit the online cost calculator here.
In a release, the Juno Beach-based power giant says the increase is needed to cover the cost of a natural gas plant in Cape Canaveral.
