Florida's Take in Pharmaceutical Suit Settlement is Nearly $3 Million

Florida and 37 other states have reached a $40.75 million settlement with two pharmaceutical companies over deceptive and unfair trade practices.

Attorney General Pam Bondi's office said Thursday that Florida's share in the agreement with GlaxoSmithKline and SB Pharmco Puerto Rico is $2.92 million.

The suit arose from allegations the companies were adulterating drugs, creating substandard products during the manufacturing process. All of the subpar drugs were recalled several years ago, according to Bondi's office. The suspect drugs made by GSK and SB Pharmco were Kytril, an antinausea drug for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments; Bactroban, an antibiotic skin ointment; Paxil CR, a timed release form of the popular antidepressant; and Avandamet, a combination Type II diabetes drug. The settlement is not yet final and is awaiting a judicial review.
