Florida Unemployment Holds at 8.6 Percent, Up 9,000 Jobs

Floridas unemployment mark held steady in June at 8.6 percent, as 9,000 new jobs were added last month according to a state report.

The state mark is 2.1 percentage points lower than where Florida was a year ago at the same point.

In the month of June, 9,000 more Floridians got new jobs and were able to receive a paycheck to help provide for their families, Gov. Rick Scott stated in a release.

The changes were making each day are benefiting those looking for work and helping businesses recognize what a talented work force we have here in Florida.

Florida remains slightly higher than the national average, which has held the past month at 8.2 percent.

The state Department of Economic Opportunity highlighted positive work force trends with the latest numbers:

Floridas number of unemployed remains below 800,000.

Floridas unemployment rates have declined year-over-year for 19 consecutive months.

Floridas unemployment rate has declined month-over-month for 11 of the past 12 months.

Floridas job growth rate has been positive year-over-year for 23 consecutive months.

With thousands of jobs being created thanks to Governor Scott, its equally important that we ensure Floridas work force has the skills and experience necessary to be successful, DEO Executive Director Hunting F. Deutsch stated in the release.

DEO, Workforce Florida and the states 24 regional workforce boards continue to work together in looking for innovative and effective ways to support those who are unemployed and help them return to the work force.
