Florida TaxWatch Backs Will Weatherford on Replacing State Pensions

Florida TaxWatch presidentand CEO Dominic M. Calabro released the following statement in response to a proposal by incoming House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, to have new state employees enrolled in 401k-style retirement plans instead of the state pension system.

Florida TaxWatch was extremely pleased this afternoon to hear Speaker-Designate Will Weatherford address the issue of state employee retirement plans.

"Moving state employees into a defined contribution plan has long been a recommendation of Florida TaxWatch and the Florida TaxWatch Government Cost Savings Task Force.

"Today, in fact, the Task Force for FY 2013-14, chaired by Mr. John Alexander of Alico Inc., met in Orlando to review draft language for its upcoming report and recommendations, and specifically reaffirmed the importance of this particular recommendation.

"Florida TaxWatch looks forward to working with the speaker-designate to implement this policy for new state employees starting in FY 2013-14.
