Florida Republicans Speak about Former Congressman Clay Shaw

Several Republicans across the state paid tribute to the late Clay Shaw, who passed away Tuesday.

"Representative Clay Shaw served the citizens of Florida with integrity," said Gov. Rick Scott of Shaw. "Representative Shaw authored the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 and he introduced the Missing and Exploited Children Act of 1982.In 2008, he was named a Great Floridian by the Florida Department of State. Representative Shaws willingness to work across the aisle to solve problems made him an effective champion for Florida seniors, environmental treasures like the Everglades, and our nations children."

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., also commemorated Shaw and his achievements in the House of Representatives, where he served from 1981-2007:

For those of who have represented areas in South Florida and Palm Beach County, Clay Shaw casts a huge shadow," said Rooney. "In his long career, he fought for conservative principles, valued results over rhetoric, and always listened to his constituents and put the needs of his district first. His example still serves as a guide for the Florida delegation, which he chaired for more than a decade. Clay Shaw loved his country and his state, was a true servant to his community, and he will be deeply missed.
