Florida Legislature Considers Repeal of Red-Light Cameras

It was only three years ago that the Florida Legislature voted to allow red-light cameras throughout the Sunshine State, but it's possible that the cameras may end up getting banned altogether.

"They were initially sold as safety devices, but I have come to firmly believe that they are now being used as backdoor tax increases," said Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, when he announced legislation to ban the cameras. A similar House bill was filed by Rep. Frank Artiles, R-Miami.

Brandes has the backing of a powerful figure in the Senate: Senate President Don Gaetz. Gaetz has always voted against the red-light cameras, according to a spokeswoman.

Yet even with Gaetz on his side, Brandes may be fighting an uphill battle against law enforcement agencies and public safety advocates. These groups maintain the red-light cameras help save lives.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation there are currently 404 red-light cameras at intersections. According to the Department of Highway Safety's annual report, in the 12 months ending June 30, 2012, there were 999,929 citations issued statewide.

According to the Sun Sentinel, no dates have been set for a hearing on the red-light cameras, but the Legislature will be in Tallahassee monthly from now until the legislative session begins in March.
