According to a Wall Street Journal report, mortgage firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are looking into work done by the David J. Stern law firm on their behalf. The firm is currently being investigated by Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum for creating false documents or forging data in order to hastily process foreclosure paperwork.
The report details a deposition from an ex-employee of the firm stating that papers were backdated by Fannie ahead of inspections.
The government-backed mortgage firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were at the center of the original crisis that led to the housing collapse in 2008 that infected the rest of the economy. Now they may be pulled into the latest housing debacle.
