Florida Dems Go on the Attack Over Unpaid Unemployment Claims

The Florida Democratic Party criticized Gov. Rick Scott on a conference call with the press on Thursday, saying Scott's leadership and failed unemployment website have hurt thousands of Florida families.

After three months, Rick Scott's failed unemployment website is still broken,"said House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston. "Millions of dollars of claims have gone unpaid; tens of thousands of out-of-work Floridians are living on the margins, struggling to pay rent and feed their families. People are literally selling the shirt off their backs, hoping to keep their families fed."

Rick Scott should have taken immediate action if he cares about struggling Floridians, yet over three months later he seems unphased that Senator Bill Nelson is taking the lead in restoring the benefits that hard-working Floridians deserve, said FDP chairwoman Allison Tant."Tens of thousands of Floridians are asking, 'When will the unemployment system finally work?' Rick Scott needs to show hes listening. Right now, it seems hes got his head in the sand."

The Republican Party of Florida was quick to respond to the criticism, with RPOF Chairman Lenny Curry saying Tant and Thurston should keep their focus on flood insurance rate hikes.

"Instead of making specious attacks, Allison Tant and Perry Thurston should follow Governor Scott's lead and ask their own party's president to use his executive authority to stop flood insurance rate hikes that are hurting Florida families," said Curry. "Just as Debbie Wasserman Schultz proved last weekend and Bill Nelson is proving this week, the Florida Democratic Party has no positive policy agenda to offer to Floridians."
