The Fix Was in at Miami Univision: Only Spanish Mayoral Candidates Invited

Ethnic tensions bubbled to the surface in Miami-Dade's mayoral race as non-Spanish speaking candidates complained they were excluded from a debate this week.

The debate, broadcast by Spanish language TV channel Univision, included just four of 11 candidates. Univision said it had invited the top four fund-raisers -- Jose "Pepe" Cancio, Carlos Gimenez, Marcelo Llorente and Julio Robaina -- all of whom are Spanish speakers. The seven other candidates who were not invited are not Hispanic.

Luther Campbell, an African-American and former rap star, cried foul. He told CBS Miami he was appalled at Wednesday's "Cuban-only forum."

Roosevelt Bradley, another black candidate, saidhe was "outraged" that the Florida International University hosted the "polarizing and divisive event."

"This turns the clock back 50 years on race and ethnic relations," Bradley said.

Ah, another day in Miami's roiling melting pot.

The election to fill the seat of Carlos Alvarez, who was recalled in a special election, is set for May 24.
