Facing Tough Contest for Dem AG Nomination, Dan Gelber Releases Proposals
On Thursday morning, Sen. Dan Gelber of Miami Beach --locked in a tight race with Sen. Dave Aronberg of Greenacres for the Democratic nomination for attorney general --unveiled a number of proposals that he would enact if elected:fighting corruption, coordinating law-enforcement efforts, and protecting children, consumers and the environment.
The attorney general is the peoples lawyer and I intend to make sure our lawyers are singularly focused on protecting Floridians, said Gelber. We have great challenges in the area of consumer protection and fraud in government, so those will be among the top priorities of our office.Further, Floridas next attorney general will face the most complex litigation imaginable and Floridians expect to have their next AG ready to hold BP accountable and ensure our state has the laws in place to do so. Finally, we need an attorney general who will de-politicize the office so that it can focus on the great challenges facing our state.
Gelber also called for the creation of an investment fraud unit that will work with the SEC and federal prosecutors to protect Florida investors.
Florida, unfortunately, has the greatest criminal challenges of nearly any state and it is up to the attorney general to provide the leadership and standards to make that office truly exceptional. Floridians deserve that in their next chief legal officer, said Gelber.
