With Exception of Senate and AG Contests, Florida Democrats Unite for November

The Democrats held their Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Hollywood this weekend and raised more than $700,000 for the party.

Its a strange year for Florida Democrats.

The two leading candidates in the U.S. Senate race, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek and billionaire financier Jeff Greene, are far behind both independent Gov. Charlie Crist and former House Speaker Marco Rubio, the likely Republican nominee in the polls. But state CFO Alex Sink, the likely Democratic nominee for governor, while not a favorite, has a chance against the Republican candidate -- especially as Rick Scott and Bill McCollum continue to tear into one another. Democrats are also optimistic about picking up a Cabinet spot -- namely the attorney general post.

There has been more focus on the Republican races, from the showdown between Crist and Rubio earlier in the year to the Scott-McCollum battle. But while there are some Democratic battles going on (namely between Meek and Greene for the Senate and Dan Gelber and Dave Aronberg for the attorney general post), on a whole the Democrats are pretty united. Look for them to rally behind Sink and ignore the Senate race.

Its far too early to say what will happen, and it is way too early to think Democrats have their best chance to win a gubernatorial race since 1994. But things are going their way to some extent -- especially as the GOP primary between Scott and McCollum gets nasty. Even if Meek or Greene is polling less than 20 percent, Florida Democrats should not be underestimated.
