Ex-Cane Sam Shields Seals Deal for Packers in NFC Championship Win

A former Miami Hurricane played a big role in the NFC Championship game Sunday.

No, it wasn't the Chicago Bears' speedy Devin Hester or tight end Greg Olsen. It was Green Bay Packers' safety Sam Shields, who intercepted two Chicago passes -- one just before halftime and one at the end of the game to seal Green Bay's 21-14 victory.

Shields, who struggled as a butter-fingered receiver for the U, was converted to defensive back in his senior year. He then landed a roster spot in Green Bay, and his sure hands and quick feet helped land the Packers in the Super Bowl. Oh, the omnipresent Shields blitzed on key downs, too, and recorded a sack.

Whatever your feelings about Green Bay and Chicago, Shields' performance and perseverance is a personal feel-good story -- and another chapter of UM lore in the NFL.
