Elizabeth Warren Benefits if Hillary and Biden Opt Out of 2016

National polls show former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the top candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and, if she stays out, Vice President Joe Biden leads the pack. But poll released late last week shows a few Democrats stand to benefit if those two candidates stay out of the race.

Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic firm, released a poll on Friday which shows Clinton in the pole position if she runs, taking 52 percent of those surveyed, followed by Biden in distant second with 13 percent. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is in third with 6 percent followed by U.S. Sen. Kristin Gillibrand of New York with 5 percent. Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who is running for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey, takes 3 percent followed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York and former Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana who get 2 percent each. Gov. Martin OMalley of Maryland and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia lag behind with 1 percent each.

When Clinton is taken out of the equation, Biden leads the field with 34 percent. Warren moves to second with 13 percent. With Clinton out, another Empire State politician -- Cuomo -- moves up to third with 10 percent. Booker takes 4 percent while Gillibrand slips down to 3 percent, tying her with OMalley. Schewitzer remains at 2 percent, tying him with Warner.

If both Clinton and Biden stay out of the race, Warren moves to the front of the pack with 20 percent while Cuomo is in second with 11 percent. Booker takes third with 8 percent while Gillibrand takes 5 percent. Schweitzer takes 4 percent, Warner 3 percent and OMalley 2 percent in this scenario.

The poll of 418 Democrats was taken from July 19-21 and had a margin of error of +/- 4.7 percent.
